Number Twelve Girl.

I love Peter Capaldi. I called him as a Doctor before he was a Doctor. I wasn't sure how they would do it with his Torchwood story line (silly me, I shouldn't have worried). I don't think they've given him the best story lines, he such a damn fine actor that I want him to have the best, but it still makes me happy to see him bounding across the stage.

This one goes to eleven...but first it goes to ten.

Angry Birds and Adventure Times.

Last year I did a series of posts for Halloween. This year...I didn’t. And it wasn’t until Halloween day itself that I even felt moved to doodle. And this is what I doodled...

He was inspired by those cupcakes that use Oreos to make the owl faces but I have no idea why he’s so angry. Maybe because I didn’t post him on Halloween. Sorry, birdie, way too busy!

And just because, here’s a girl pretending to be a boy pretending to have an adventure with a dog who is pretending he cares.

When my friend Jason showed me the pilot for Adventure Time, about a year before it finally aired, we kind of got obsessed. The ringtone on my phone may have been Finn yelling “My hat is AWESOME!” for quite some time...it may have been. Maybe. Possibly. Most definitely.

A Khaleesi and her dragons.

So, the clear front runner for sales at SDCC this year was the Khaleesi. Even better, she was purchased by both a girl dressed as the Khaleesi and a girl wearing a shirt that read “Damn, it feels good to be Khaleesi.”

 I have read the first book in George R. R. Martin’s series, A Game of Thrones, and I do plan on reading the rest. In the first book there is very little description of Daenerys Targaryen beyond her silvery hair and her lavender eyes so I went a bit with the TV version of Dany and cutie-fied her dragons a bit.

This was a particularly fun and unexpected nerdy girl to draw. I was kind of thinking that I just needed one more pin-up to round out my sketchbook and looking at a pose I had started working on for another image when I got the idea for Ms. Stormborn herself. I quite like her and it made me really happy to see other fans of the book and the character get a kick out of her too.

I honestly don't have much to say about this one. She was kind of a last minute sketch that ended up in a sketchbook I sold at San Diego Comic Con last year. I like her, but I was truly pleased when a handsome boy dressed as Han Solo told me that he really liked her because he was a pie baker. How awesome is a pie baking Han Solo? Pretty awesome.

Last year I did a little pin-up book for San Diego Comic-Con. It was my first time doing an ashcan style book and...I liked it. It was fun. And even better, people bought it! I actually sold quite a few and that was all kinds of awesome. The book was a collection of many of my nerdy pin-up girls with a few crying girls thrown in.  It was a nice way to show off the evolution of the nerdy girl and come up with a few more.

Now, obviously, I look some liberties with the female form so that I could add the type on top. But that’s what we do with pin-up girls. Stretch them out and mold them to our will. Luckily, these aren't real girls so I don’t feel too bad if they get a little odd in their proportions. 

Anyway, I enjoyed doing this ashcan enough that I am attempting to do another. Hopefully I will have enough nerdy girls for this year’s book...it’s getting to be that kind of panicky time again...we’ll see how it goes....

WiP.

WIP is a radio station in the Philadelphia area. It is also the common abbreviation “works in progress.”

Works in progress are always a problem. I want to show them off, and in some instances, get some advice. But I also know they aren’t yet finished and I am not ready for any criticism concerning them. Do you show them or play it close to the vest? Well, I guess in this case, I’ll show you what I have.

These are some of my WiPs this week.

This cutie is actually a mermaid, which you would know if I was willing to show you the whole thing. I’m not. So there. She’s titled “Let's Cuttle” because, as you can see, she’s wearing a cuttle fish for a hat. Is it a cheap gag. Oh yes, yes it is. Do I love that cheap gag? Oh yes. Yes I  do.

And here is a lovely French lady. When complete she will be framed in gilt and standing before a damask papered wall...when complete.

Both these girlies will be in my next little collection of pin up girls, which I hope to have ready for San Diego Comic Con. Hope is the operative word.

Cute Little Cupcake!

I’ve been working on a new pin-up girl. She’s not done yet but I wanted to show you how she’s coming along.

I really get a kick out of drawing these pin-ups and I think my favorite part about it is trying to make them demure and sensible. Granted, it’s very unlikely that any semi-nude girl is going to lie down in a giant cupcake, but I am pretty sure if she did, she’s be wearing knickers. Really, it’s just a good idea on all counts.

In honor of the beginning of October, the month of chills and terror and things that go bump in the night...I offer you my original nerdy girl.

I am no fan of zombie movies...well...that's not exactly true (Shaun of the Dead is one of my all time favorites!)...I’m not a fan of horror (No, wait, I love Nightmare on Elm Street!)...that's not true either...hmmm...well, I was trying to make a sexy zombie. And I think I did an OK job. I was told that she is pleasingly demure and sports just the right amount of gore. Disturbingly, she also looks an awful lot like my friend Monika, which I SWEAR was pure happenstance.

So, I don't know how big of a geek you are. You may not be as dorky as I am and if you are not, I guess what you see here is a naked lady covering her bits with comic books. So...yay! Naked lady! Nothing wrong with that. If you are a bit of a comic geek, you may recognize the title of this "pin-up" girl (and yeah, I use that term loosely. I call them (Oh, there are more naked ladies!) my "Nerdy Girls" and I love drawing them...but we'll talk about that some other time.)...where was I? Oh right, the title...see in 1954 there was a book published by one Frederick Wertham. It was called "Seduction of the Innocent" and basically, it said that comics were bad and would cause all manners of juvenile delinquency. That, naturally, alarmed people. There were hearings and a Congressional investigation and some hub-bub and the next thing you know, there's the Comic-Code, which was basically like a movie rating that told people, "Hey, this book is not appropriate for you! It will make you a bad person!" 

So, see, the title is a play on words. Get it? There's a lot more to the Frederick Wertham story. And it's odd, because the book and the hearings seem to have been pretty sensationalized, and...well...ok, remember the PMRC? Kind of like that.  Maybe worse. Which would make this naked lady a little inappropriate. So there.
